Today, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting joined our neighbors in New England and Baltimore Yearly Meetings, as plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
You can read more information about the lawsuit in the story published on PYM’s website and in the press release from Democracy Forward which filed the suit. More information can also be found at NBC News.
This lawsuit is in response to one of the many actions the new administration took last week, specifically to rescind a longstanding policy that prevented U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from entering places of worship. (This has been reported by NPR, Reuters, and other news sources.) As a result, people may avoid going to their houses of worship for fear of government enforcement. This injures immigrants who may stay home instead of worshiping with their spiritual communities. It also injures the spiritual communities who will lose the ability to worship with all who share the Light. ????For these reasons, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting is taking a leadership role in our country to speak truth to power and filing suit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Friends may reach out to me at nmosgrove@pym.org or Christie Duncan-Tessmer, General Secretary of PYM, at cduncan-tessmer@pym.org. Friends can access the complaint by following this link.
You are also invited to attend a Zoom meeting tomorrow evening at 6:30 PM for information and for worship.
