People Light Theater
1894 - Pioneering Women in Medicine
Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania

2026 Mar Woman Dr

Unearth the untold stories of the pioneering women in medicine who led the charge for women’s health and reproductive freedom 150 years ago, in a world premiere with local roots. This original play follows the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania class of 1894, a diverse group of students whose experiences draw urgent connections to contemporary struggles against misogyny in healthcare and law. Blending rigorous research with imaginative play, acclaimed theatre-maker Suli Holum (Hurricane Diane) returns to People’s Light to craft and perform in The Woman Question alongside company artist Melanye Finister (A Raisin in the Sun).

Plymouth Friends Meeting has a long association with Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania

- Dr. Hiram Corson was one of the doctors who supported the founding of the college and was a lifelong advocate and teacher of female physicians. It was his lobbying over 11 years against the PA Medical Society's resolution disapproving of any members of the PA Medical Society holding professional intercourse with the professors or the alumni of the Woman’s Medical College. Lobbying that cost him patients and standing in the medical community, The withdraw of this resolution did not occur until 1871, 23 years before this class.

- Dr. Corson also established the practice of woman physicians and staff to replace male Doctors and staff in woman's mental institutions thus improving patients safety and employing doctors from Woman's Medical Collage.

- M. Louise Gloeckner, was physician at Woman's Medical also serving as Medical Director and was the first woman vice president of the American Medical Association where she brought Women's Medical College philosophy to the wider Medical community.  There continues to be a Research Fellowship in her name at Drexel University.
